Wide Pet Gates - Mounting option Limitations

First of all, for the sake of this discussion, let's classify "wide" as meaning more than 48 inches in width. Second, the types of pet gates that we are going to recapitulate can be identified within three major groups, fixed mounted, pressure mounted and free standing.

We are fortunate today that there are multiple options, styles and colors to pick from. Any way we still need to think where we intend to place the gate, and how it will be used.

Lets observe the limitations of Each Gate Type.

Pressure Mounted Pet Gates:

All pressure mounted gates have four pressure screws (two on each end) that are used to apply outwards pressure from the gate to a solid outside such as a wall or door frame.

The fact that the gate must be pressurized in order to originate an sufficient barrier, causes a width limitation. The maximum size is generally nearby the 60 inch mark. Beyond the 60 inch mark, pressure gates tend to become weak in the middle area of the gate.

Another limitation is the width variable on any pressure gate. The variable distance is simply the width of the pressure screws. Most pressure screws enlarge out practically 2 to 2 1/2 inches from each side of the gate. As a consequent the total variable width of a pressure gate is between 4 and 4 1/2 inches.

Optional extensions can be added to the pressure gate, extending the width up to the 60 inch maximum. However, as mentioned previously, extending beyond the 60 inch mark places too much strain on the extension connectors (short pins that connect each extension to the gate). The gate becomes less sufficient for your purposes and more likely to damage.

Pressure gates are a great option for the 48 inch to 60 inch spaces.

Fixed Mounted Pet Gates:

The only real limitation that you would have with fixed mounted pet gates is the fact that their mounting brackets need to be screwed into the wall or door frame. For many people, this would be a last resort.

Another dinky limitation is that fixed mounted gates do not regularly touch the floor, so for spans up to about 72 inches these gates accomplish effectively without any modifications. Any way when these gates are extended for widths beyond 72 inches, they need some sort of stabilizer bar.

Usually manufacturers will provide a T-bar which connects to the lowest of the gate forming a stabilizer footing. T-Bars are generally required for every two gate extensions. With this approach, there is no width limitation.

Free Standing Pet Gates:

There are any designs for free standing gates. The most coarse is a gate that has a T-Bar attached at each end of the gate.

A more modern create uses a zig-zag pattern with multiple panels that take the shape of a W.

This shape provides the gate with stability. The zig-zag pattern can be compressed to fit smaller spaces and extended to fit larger spaces.

The limitation comes in how far you can enlarge the panels. If you enlarge them too far (or straighten out the zig-zag too much), then the gate will become less stable. Manufacturers regularly specify the maximum width that these panels can be extended.

Like the fixed mounted gates, these free standing gates can be extended to any width by adding more panels to the zig-zag.

Considering the Right Type of Wide Pet Gate for Your Needs:

Choosing the gate that is most acceptable for your needs should be based on the routine of your pet.

If your pet would likely endeavor to get past the barrier, then you would be good off using a mounted gate (most secure) or a solid pressure gate.

If your pet is more likely to respect any barrier, then the free standing gates would be much more practical for you.
